November 20, 2009
It's Friday and I am definitely not in love with this weather; in fact, I'm heartbroken. We hoped and wished, made snow when possible and wore our pajamas inside out for a month, but Mother Nature appears to be more of a golfer than a skier. It's a little early yet for Old Man Winter to come in and take his post, but if you're out there, sir, please come back, like now!
Opening day will be postponed until further notice, but don't lose hope, there is white at the end of the tunnel! Extended forecasts and optimistic snow reporters agree - cold air appears to be on track for Okemo in the days around Thanksgiving. We should see a drastic change in temperatures about a week from today, with ample snowmaking conditions settling in for an extended period of time. Even more long-range predictions say that beginning in December the Northeast will experience a snowier than usual winter. Plus, Okemo's snowguns are foaming at the nozzles and ready to pounce at the first hint of below-freezing temps.
Luckily, there is a lot happening off the slopes to keep us occupied until it's time to point it downhill. The annual Ski & Ride Swap for the benefit of the Okemo Mountain School begins today at 4 p.m. and wraps up at 7 for the day. You have all weekend to wander into the Base Lodge and browse through the sea of new and used gear for sale at great prices. Doors will be open on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Today in web land, Jason from www.IWearYourShirt.com sports an Okemo t-shirt and hosts fun activities over Twitter (@IWearYourShirt) and on his live U-stream video feed today at 3 p.m. If you think you know Okemo, then tune in to his live video for a chance to win some lift tickets.
Beginning last night, the Okemo crew descended on Boston for the Boston Herald Ski & Snowboard Show at the Bayside Expo Center. They'll be there through Sunday with special guest and gold medalist Ross Powers joining them this evening. If you're in town be sure to drop by to talk to some fellow winter lovers and maybe even enter the Okemo Dizzy Ski Scramble where everyone wins.
Winter is here and it's time to pack on that little extra to keep you warm. A good place to start will be this Thanksgiving at the Coleman Brook Tavern's traditional turkey day buffet. On November 26 from 3-8 p.m., the chef prepares delicacies like Vermont farmhouse chowder, homemade cornbread and stuffing, and of course, enough bird to put you into winter hibernation with the bears.
The weekend after Thanksgiving will be an eventful one. Not only does it look like it will be right around the time we open for winter, but we also have the "What I Learned This Summer" Rail Jam and the Trot-it-Off 5K Run and Tot's Trot on Saturday, November 26.
It shouldn't be hard to keep busy over the next few days with all that's going on. We have to stick together in times like these, be strong, and think snow! We'll see you on the mountain soon!
